Microsoft's GitHub has spent three years convincing developers that AI pair-programming is indispensable, that Copilot is less a luxury than a utility. Now, having successfully created dependency, it is changing the terms. The new token-based billing model replaces predictable monthly fees with metered consumption, and the developer community's reaction has been swift, profane, and illuminating.
The backlash is not merely about money, though the money matters. Developers who previously paid a flat $19 per month for Copilot Pro are now confronting bills that scale with usage—and for power users who leaned heavily on the tool, that scaling is steep. Early reports from affected users suggest monthly costs tripling or quadrupling for workflows that remained unchanged. "What a joke," has become a refrain across developer forums, though the actual language tends toward the unprintable.
The dependency trap snaps shut
GitHub's timing is instructive. Token-based pricing arrives precisely when switching costs are highest.
